Chapter 15

“How?” Lucky asked as he started to run now. He pulled his own pulse rifle out. He hadn’t felt the need until now.

“Rocky, are you getting anything?”

“Not a thing,” she said, sounding genuinely worried for once. “She must not be conscious. She’s so powerful, there’s no way I wouldn’t read her.”

“Even if she was down deep in that hole?”

“Even in the mines. I know it. She’s powerful.”

“You already said that.”

“Mmmhmm,” she said. “I’m not getting anything except.”

“Except what?”

“Except that there is another network.”

“Fang has one with her AI up here.”

“It’s down below and it’s … different.”

“How?”

She sounded frustrated. “It dropped out again. But it was almost like it sensed me reaching out for it.”

“That sounds creepy.”

“Well, most networks are open and looking for connections.”

“So, not creepy?”

“Maybe.”

“Bottom line, you don’t find here out there.”

“If she’s still alive, she’s not conscious,” Rocky said firmly.

Jiang was shaking her head and talking as Lucky was going back and forth with Rocky. “While we were laying down fire. They were sneaky bastards. Very good gear. I didn’t register a single movement and neither did my AI. But they must have sent a couple sneaky bastards in. Knives said one second they was right there, then the flooding started and the lights went out, and then they were gone.”

“Fang said they are a small insertion team,” Malby said. “So they might have some advanced camo gear.”

“We’re officially not buying shit that Fang tells us,” Lucky said darkly. “And why the fuck would they go for Merlin and Spider?”

“I don’t know,” Jiang said. “But fuck me if it’s a coincidence.”

“There were eight of these fucking morons that work for Fang in there,” Malby said. “Not one of the damn asshole was covering the other entrance. We didn’t even know there was one! These assholes did and they just forgot about it. They shot three of them before we dragged ass in there right before the fucking sky started falling on us. By then, it was too late to do shit.”

“And it washed away any evidence, even if we wanted to try and track them. I mean, we assume they went back down in the mines. Beyond that, who the fuck knows.”

Lucky cursed to himself.

Zadra coughed behind him. “I need to get back.”

Lucky nodded. “This is Zadra. She’s my new best friend. We don’t let her out of our sight.”

“No,” Zadra said.

“No?” Lucky asked sharply.

“Fang’s smart,” Zadra said. “Very smart. It will take her no time at all to put together that I told you something if you treat me like anything but another member of her team. I shouldn’t even be talking to you, not where she can see it.”

“A new friend who doesn’t want to be seen with you,” Rocky chuckled. “The story of your life.”

“Fine,” Lucky said. “Go.”

“Oh, thanks for your permission,” Zadra said as she split off from the jogging marines.

Lucky quickly ran down what Zadra had told him to Jiang and Malby as they ran to join the others.
